Resumo em outra língua: This paper presents ongoing research developed as part of a masters in mathematics education at the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto. One objective of this study is to identify and analyze the possible contributions of carrying out mathematical modeling activities for learning spacial geometry with students in their 2nd year of high school. Another important objective is related to implications of how mathematical modeling helps teachers to rethink their teaching of spacial geometry, having as a major goal the development of meaningful learning for students. In addition, we intend to present and discuss relationships between mathematical modeling, meaningful learning and teaching geometry, which may contribute to the development of research and teaching practices in mathematics education. Initially, we present a brief introduction containing elements of our student and teaching experiences related to how mathematics has awakened us to the subject of research. As a result, we explain the subject of research as well as a justification as to it’s relevance. At the same time, we will demarcate an initial theoretical framework from research in mathematical modeling where we present the general guidelines of the research, the research question, and the objectives and research methodology. The objectives are to identify and analyze possible contributions for the accomplishment of mathematical modeling projects in relation to learning spatial geometry. After a review of the literature, we discuss the relationships between mathematical modeling, work projects and geometry teaching, which contribute to the development of research and pedagogical practices in mathematics education. The research is qualitative, being done with a class of students of the 2nd year of High School of a state school in the city of Viçosa, in the interior of Minas Gerais. A project called "The Geometric Forms of Our City" was developed, addressing contents of Spatial Geometry, and the participants chose places in the city from which they would like to investigate the geometric forms and which constituted the research subtopics within the project. The results of the research point to several contributions in the development of of mathematical modeling projects, both in the aspects related to the learning of the contents of spatial geometry, as well as to the formation of criticality and autonomy of the students.
