:pt_BR

This study presents a thought which considers the images produced in the field of art, principally in the context of visual arts - painting and sculpture – on the basis of an understanding of the temporal status that constitutes them. We read in Walter Benjamin, "the image is a time crystal, where the past meets the present in a lightning bolt to form a constellation", such an affirmation forms part of the basis of the aesthetic theory of the French philosopher Georges Didi-Huberman, which we endeavour in this work. The philosopher analyses artistic images – and the history that we read about them – using a no-chronological temporal model, a non-successive time; a "dual aspect” temporality, anachronistic and symptomatic. Such temporality, which is turbulent, gives rise to dialectic images – a concept formulated by Benjamin and brought up to date by Didi-Huberman. The dialectic images are the only "authentic images", they interrupt the stream of history like eddies in a river, breaking the soil of the aesthetic doctrines, and forcing us to rethink the task of the History of Art. In these images, past and present coexist, the virtual and the actual crystallize in a crystal-image, which as a result of its transparency, permits the visionary, the viewer, “to see the outpouring of time like an unfolding, like a scission,” in the words of Gilles Deleuze. We come to see, then, that these images “survive”, in accordance with the concept of Nachleben proposed by Aby Warburg, given that they never completely die and are always resurging, when we least expect it. Such survivals are incarnated in “primitive formulas”, the so-called Pathosformeln of Warburg, emotive formulas that resurge in art and in ourselves. In the work of these philosophers and art historians, we find the bases of thought to understand these artistic images and from this temporal nature, images that develop and extend themselves beyond their own visibility. At the end of the dissertation, we present an appendix, where we try to find evidence of this theory in the images of the Brazilian painter Di Cavalcanti, an artist little studied by the realm of philosophy, that carried out a job of major importance in re-signifying gestures of classic iconography (Pathosformel) and giving new value to symbols and images present in Brazilian iconography.-
