metadata.dc.description.abstracten: To reconstruct the history of the Evangelical Institute of Lavras, currently Gammon Institute, and its important contribution to the development of the education from the period, we seek to understand the educational process, its history and ideological and social purposes, understanding the importance that religion exerted to the foundation and expansion of its ideals. In this work, inserted in the line of research of History of School Institutions and/or Education and Teacher Training, we had as main purpose of this research the female participation in the Evangelical Institute of Lavras through the work of missionaries Carlota Kemper and Clara Gammon. In the first chapter of this dissertation, we bring the roots of Protestant thought and educational proposals that have been brought by the Reformation. Therefore, we seek to discuss the ideals of Calvin and Luther in a humanistic context of ideological renewal. The second chapter briefly spoken about the history of the Presbyterian Church and its place in Brazil and the history of the Evangelical Institute of Lavras. In the third chapter, to better comprehend the performance of the missionaries and educators Carlota Kemper and Clara Gammon in a religious and educational environment, in which they were inserted, it would be necessary to understand the view that the Church had of them and the reflection of this perception for the view that they had of themselves. Understanding the importance that religion had for these women is to go beyond the cultural dimension, realizing the power relations that are legitimized by this system from the beginning of the organization of their ideals. To treat our particular subject, we will make an incursion into the historical perspective of the woman in Religion mission as an introduction to this relevant topic. As we research the documentation this tesis we could see a constant female presence, not only in Presbyterian mission, but in the life of the Evangelical Institute of Lavras. There is a recognition, not only by the institution, but as well by the city itself, on the importance of women's contribution to the growth and consolidation of the mission and educational project in the region. Clara Gammon, like many others, turned out to be erased, perhaps because it is part of a denomination that formed their women to be invisible workers of a harvest that recognize only the disciples and not the women who accompanied them. The missionaries, as discussed by Eliana Moura da Silva (2012), entered social spaces as them ventured to leave their homes, many still single, running predominantly male spaces in a deeply patriarchal society. By adopting these functions, even if unintentionally, they took a subversive role in society that kept most of their women in a very well demarcated and defined role.
