metadata.dc.description.abstracten: We observed that some people share the idea that mathematics is an important and indispensable discipline in scientific development and in the development of other areas. At the same time, consensus on it as something "difficult", "reserved for a few people" is created and shared by some students, teachers, parents, the media and society in general. It is not uncommon to hear reports from people who have experienced a bad time with mathematics. These shared reports and the myths created contribute to the development of feelings related to this discipline, such as fear and aversion, which, in some way, interfere in the learning process of this discipline. Considering this situation, it is understood that, when understanding the reasons for this rejection, one can find interventions in order to make the teaching of mathematics more attractive and less arid. Given this situation, we decided to investigate if Mathematics is something that tensions a group of students and, if it does, investigate how these tensions change the way of thinkimg, feelimg and acting. The research was based on the Social Representations Theory proposed by Moscovici in 1978 and its developments, particularly the dimensional / procedural approach defined by Jodelet in 2001. The data were collected through a questionnaire and interviews with 10 students from the 1st grade of high school at a Federal Institute of the State of Minas Gerais and analyzed from the dimensions created by Ramos in her doctoral research and interpreted in the light of the Theory of Social Representations. The results showed that, for the research students, the language of Mathematics hinders their learning and the teacher's explanation serves to facilitate or to difficult this process. His dedication to studies and attention to the teacher's explanations contribute to success in this discipline. A bad relationship between student and teacher can generate disinterest in learning mathematics. The taste for study, although many of the students have shown difficulties in learning mathematics, is justified by the perceived usefulness in the contents of this discipline for the future profession. Overcoming fear, dedication to studies and the support of the teacher contributed to increase motivation to learn. The social representations of family members, teachers, friends and classmates influenced the representations of these students. The stereotyped idea that “everything has Mathematics” was mentioned several times by them. Mathematics as something useful, something easy and something not very useful are some of the social representations that the students intended. From a reflection on the social representations of students in relation to Mathematics, it is possible for the teacher to intervene in the classroom in order to ease the situation of rejection in the face of this discipline. This study can provide an investigation capable of giving the student a voice in order to highlight his way of thinking, feeling and acting on Mathematics.
